At the beginning of the 20th century France had more than 2700 breweries. By the Second World War
this number had declined to fewer than 1000. By 1970 there were about 100 still operating; only 54 by
1983; and only 30 by the mid-1990's. During the past few years, new small breweries haveappeared across
France to the delight of beer lovers and collectors.
I have been collecting French beer items for over 20 years. Finding oldglasses and advertising items is always
a pleasure, but because I have limited space to store my "treasures" I was forced to limit my collection to
pre-1950 items only.
My passion started in 1980, while I had a summer job in the brewery Bouchart in Saint Amand les Eaux.
I found the beer labels so attractive that I decided to begin collecting them. A little later on I decided to also
collect glasses, and finally I began collecting every kind of beer related item.
In the following pages, you will find some pictures of my collection (Apart from some coasters which are
from the collection of my friend Philippe) This is just a sample of the breweriana produced during the first
half of the 20th century. During this period, every french county had its own breweries. A vastmajority of these
breweries were in the northern part of the country. Sadly, most of them disapeared. Only their breweriana still
survive.
